Seeds of Independence: Freed Peoples’ Settlement on Mason Neck
Sunday, February 1
Program at 2:00 p.m.
Learn of the fishing industry that once flourished along the nearby Potomac River. Fishing provided food and employment for the community established by freed blacks in the late 19th century on the perimeter of Gunston Hall. A filmed interview of a longtime Mason Neck resident highlights this early history. Mansion tours throughout the day identify slaves owned by George Mason whose descendants possibly remain on Mason Neck.
