HOG ISLAND SHEEP

The denizens of Gunston Hall's pasture are a flock of woolly sheep. These are a rare breed, descendants of a flock found on Hog Island, a barrier island near the month of the James River in Virginia.

This type of sheep probably lived on the island for several centuries, evolving in response to the island's harshness into a breed known for its hardiness, foraging ability, and reproductive efficiency.
