Symposium: Dissent Made Material

February 4 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

FREE
Tune in for the second session of our annual decorative arts symposium on February 4.
In this session, Gunston Hall will be joined by quilt historian Barbara Brackman and look at a variety of early-19th-century needlework designed to raise money and increase awareness of the antislavery cause in England, America and Africa. We’ll look at women’s work from pincushions to patchwork quilts with the theme: “May the Points of Our Needles Prick the Slaveholders Conscience.”
Do you already have questions you’d like answered? Send us an email at historic@gunstonhall.org and you can have your question answered live on Facebook during the program.
Barbara Brackman is an independent researcher who has published many popular histories of quilts including Facts & Fabrications: Unraveling the History of Quilts & Slavery and Quilts from the Civil War. She is a founding member of the American Quilt Study Group. See her blog: https://barbarabrackman.blogspot.com/
