Dabney Herndan Maury

M, b. 21 May 1822, d. 11 January 1900
     Maury graduated from West Point in 1846 and served as a professor their from 1847-1852. He joined the confederate service at Virginia's secession and was promoted to major general in November 1862.

In 1868 Maury organized the Southern Historical Society and he served as its chairman until 1886.

In 1885 Pres. Grover Cleveland appointed him as the U.S. minister to Colombia, a post which he held until 1889.

In 1894 he published his memoirs as RECOLLECTIONS OF A VIRGINIAN
IN THE MEXICAN, INDIAN, AND CIVIL WARS. This book has been published online at http://docsouth.unc.edu/maury/maury.html.1 Dabney was born at Fredericksburg, Va., on 21 May 1822. He married Anna Augusta Mason at Cleveland, King George Co., Virginia, on 10 March 1852.2 Dabney died on 11 January 1900 at Peoria, Il., at age 77.3 He was buried on 13 January 1900 at City Cemetery, Fredericksburg, Va..4
