Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, at the All Saint's Lutheran Church, 2626 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, KS; burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Porter Funeral Home, 18th and Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, KS. The family suggests memorial contributions to All Saint's Lutheran Church or Heart of America Hospice in care of the funeral home. Gerald was born June 9, 1919, in Windsor, MO, the son of Guy and Alice (Plunkett) Roach. He was a 1937 graduate of Excelsior Springs High School. After high school Gerald went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company until entering the Army September 3, 1940. He served with the 216th Armored Engineer Battalion for over two years, served 10 months in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia supervising 45 men in engineer construction and demolition. December 16, 1945, he was separated from the Army and returned to his position at Southwestern Bell in Kansas City, KS. He married Dorothy Virginia Hobbs December 24, 1946. Gerald was a member of the Communication Workers of America Union. He retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company after 45 years of service. Gerald enjoyed bowling, stained glass, woodworking, and a good game of pitch. He did volunteer work for Porter Funeral Home, and assembling bicycles for underprivileged children. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He and Dorothy were long time members of All Saints Lutheran Church. Gerald lived in Kansas City, KS with Dorothy until entering Brandonwoods Nursing Home in February 1998. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy; his parents; and sisters Vivian Walters and Francis Sharp. Survivors include his son, Gerald Roach II, Baldwin City, KS; daughter, Barbara Sterba, Baldwin City, KS; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.1
