He taught geology at Dartmouth and Wesleyan before joining the U.S. Geological Survey, where he remained for 34 years, doing field work in many regions of the United States. He was a fellow of the Geological Society of America, which honored him with its Kirk Bryan Award in Geomorphology in 1966.
