Charles Sinclair Taylor Burke, former Chairman and CEO of Burke and Herbert Bank and Trust Co., passed away January 11. Taylor Burke, as he was commonly known, assumed management of the bank in 1951. His career spanned 52 years, including 20 years as president and 10 years as chairman and CEO.
Taylor Burke is probably best known for his constant companion, Runyon, his pet parrot. He and Runyon were well known throughout the Alexandria area. In 1991, the Associated Press ran a picture worldwide of Taylor Burke testifying before a Congressional Committee on Bank Regulations with Runyon’s successor perched on his shoulder. Alexandria and community banking are a little less lively with the loss of one of its favorite sons.
