Special Projects
There are always meaningful ways to support Gunston Hall, from preservation efforts to educational programming. Our current funding priority is the Restoration of the Historic Riverside Garden.
Following detailed archaeological and landscape research, we are working to revive the garden George Mason originally designed to nourish his family and reflect his Enlightenment ideals. Both functional and reflective, the Riverside Garden was a unique expression of Mason’s intellect and status in colonial Virginia. We invite you to join us in restoring this one-of-a-kind space to its former beauty.
The Louis and Eleanor Hertle Heritage Society
Louis and Eleanor Hertle were Gunston Hall’s first benefactors. As private owners of Gunston Hall in the 1930s, they began considering ways to preserve this historic property. It was their wish that Gunston Hall become a memorial to George Mason upon their passing. In 1949, Gunston Hall formally passed to the Commonwealth of Virginia to be administered by a Board of Regents chosen by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.
In the spirit of their generous bequest, we have established The Louis and Eleanor Hertle Heritage Society to recognize the generosity and foresight of donors who support Gunston Hall through estate and planned gifts.
Planned giving options include:
