The George Mason Institute at George Mason’s Gunston Hall Presents a Program featuring Guest Speaker Dr. John C. Rand, Attorney, Author, & Historian on Wednesday, October 7.
The new George Mason Institute at Gunston Hall, the 18th-century estate of Founding Father George Mason, will present a program for Mason Memorial Day, October 7, on the 228th anniversary of his death. The commemorative event, in this 250th celebration of George Mason’s authorship of the Virginia Declaration of Rights and the Declaration of Independence will commemorate all the people who lived, worked, died, and are buried at Gunston Hall.
The event will begin with a memorial benediction from the Reverend Daniel Cenci, Priest-in-Charge, Pohick Episcopal Church. Pohick Episcopal Church is the historic church where both George Mason and George Washington worshiped and served as members of the vestry. It is known as “the Mother Church of Northern Virginia,” because it was the first permanent church in the colony to be established north of the Occoquan River, sometime prior to 1724. Recently, a memorial marker to George Mason was dedicated to George Mason in the church cemetery for his association with the parish.
The guest lecture will be given by Dr. John C. Rand. Dr. Rand is a practicing attorney and historian that lives in Mason Neck, near Gunston Hall. He will speak on his new book is George Mason and the Tenth Amendment which explores the factors motivating Mason’s interest in rights for the emerging republic and, through this lens, examines the history and significance of the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution up through the modern era, including the judicial decisions around it over more than 200 years. Dr. Rand will have books available for purchase and signing.
Doors will open for seating at 4:00 PM.
Light refreshments will be provided for guests.
The program is free for the public.
