The words Juneteenth 2022 laid over an image of a variety of beans in bags.

Juneteenth

Juneteenth marks the annual celebration of the news of freedom reaching people who were enslaved in the farthest reaches of the United States at the end of the Civil War.  From the first days of slavery in America, people held in bondage kept alive cultural traditions and formed new customs.  This year, Gunston Hall is commemorating those people of African descent whose ingenuity and expertise shaped some of the plants we know and love today.

Drop in between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 19, 2022, to explore the some of the growing things influenced by people held in slavery in the 18th century.  Discover plants and foods that were likely familiar to enslaved people at Gunston Hall such as Joe, Nan, Peter, Venus, Sampson and Bess.

Regular admission fees apply.
